X Week

Not many words start with X! We learned about X-rays and Xylophones.  We had songs and stories about foxes this week because fox ends with X.

Matching the x-rays with the pictures.

We don't have real xylophones so we played musical patterns on glockenspiels and we wrote stories.

We went to the music room with Mrs Ward. We got the xylophones and then we walked back to class. We got to play the xylophone. It sounded very nice and it sounded mellow on the keys. We made beautiful music with the keys then we put them in the piles.
Milla
I am going to the music room with my friends and we all have xylophones.
Zayne
We went to the old hall to get xylophones. Then we came back to class. Then we played the xylophones and we did lovely musical notes and then we did story writing.

Painting - Hagley Park is Daffodil Park

We have started on our next painting. We looked at a photo of the daffodils in Hagley Park.

Stage 1. Paint the sky and grass. Mix blue and yellow paint to make a great colour for the grass. Try and make the grass look like it is growing - short up and down brush strokes. How should we paint the sky?
Stage 2. Paint the trees. Notice that the trunks are the widest part, then the branches and then the twigs. Notice that the trees are not all growing on the horizon. Some of them are closer and seem bigger.
Stage 3. Go on a daffodil hunt at school to see what they look like up close. Use cardboard strips to make the stems and leaves of our daffodils.

Next Week - paint the yellow flowers.

Pier Paintings

We are becoming true artists - look at our landscape paintings of the New Brighton Pier. The children are showing more talent than their teacher!! The children even mixed their own blue and grey colours.

Too good to be true?

You would be surprised at how quietly we can work! Each Friday we decorate our poem of the week. This week the picture was quite tricky to colour. We had to concentrate really well to get it right.

Sound and Sound Waves

What could we do with 2 spoons and a string?
We could test how sound vibrates and travels.
Making sure the string is tight...
Wow, sound really does travel!

Week 3 - Wolf week!

We retold the story of the Three Little Pigs.
Here are some of our picture stories.

We are recording some of our stories. Oh no, our recordings were done without  a microphone and they are hard to hear over the rest of the class. We have added our wolf 'fork' paintings instead!

Telling the time

W is for watch... we are learning to tell the time.

More Painting

Last week we painted curvy koru designs. This week we have made colourful geometric designs. First we ruled straight lines. Then we chose 4 colours and mixed our paints to make even more colours.

Here are the paintings of Max, Thomas and Zayne.

We have also experimented with painting with all sorts of equipment. Here are Lukas's and Demi's paintings.

Vegetables

We learned about the differences between fruit and vegetables. We found out that it is hard to classify some fruits - pumpkin and tomatoes have seeds like fruit but we think of them as vegetables.
Sorting fruit and vegetables
On Friday we made vegetable soup. Mmmm it smelled delicious!

Aaliyah, Wincent and Zayne with some of the vegetables to go into the soup
Milla helped to grind the pepper, Demi added salt and Sophie checked it was smelling delicious.
Our soup,  Milla's amazing bread made from her special family recipe and part of the queue                                                            waiting for seconds!
Can you believe it? Even though some of us were not so sure about eating vegetable soup all, but one of us tried it. Nine children came back for seconds!

Volcano Experiment

We watched videos about volanoes and lava. We looked at our very own extinct volcano - Lyttelton Harbour! Then made our mini volcanoes. We wanted to find out which type of vinegar makes the best pretend volcano.
Miss Jang (our student teacher from Korea) helped us with our experiment.
White vinegar                            Both the same                     Brown vinegar
Our guesses - we got into groups to show which vinegar we thought would be best.
We found out that brown vinegar made the volcano last longer.

Watch the brown vinegar volcano erupt!

A vase of flowers for 'V' week

What a colourful addition to our class! We folded paper to make beautiful flowers during literacy time. Mrs Ward was busy taking reading groups so we had to make them all by ourselves!
