Rock People

We designed rock people for 'R' week. Each one has an 'R' name.Watch us make our creatures.

Measuring

We went back outside to measure again. This time we used blocks. We all had the same blocks so that we could be more consistent!

Maths - Subtraction

The Whero Stars maths group have been learning about 'taking away'. They have used the ipads to take photos of some of their work.

Science - Dissolving 

We sorted different things from the kitchen into groups. Things we thought would dissolve and things that we thought wouldn't. We tried dissolving them in water and decided which group they belonged to.

Story Teller

We had a special visitor to Russley. He was an artist, musician and storyteller. Tino pai!

Super Star

At Thursday's school assembly Milla received a certificate for getting third place in the Year 1 girls' cross country race.
Congratulations Milla, we are very proud of you!

A Focus on Science

Our science topic this term is chemistry and change. 

Dissolving Stuff

This week we went to the science room for our experiments. We found out what happens when we mixed salt, sugar and cornflour with water.

Flames

Our letter of the week is Ff.
We watched a candle flame flicker. We found out that heat changes the candle wax. The heat makes the candle hot which melts the wax and then the wax  goes hard again when it cools.
We also found out that the fire needs oxygen. The flame went out when we put a jar over the candle.

Beans

Alex brought a dried bean to school. We looked at the seeds and decided to plant two to see which one will grow the best.

Measuring, Teddies, Trains and Tigers

Measuring

We are learning about measuring. We got into pairs and measured some of the things in our playground. We found out that using steps is not a good way to measure things because we had different size steps and our answers were really different. Next week we will try again. What will we measure with next time?

Teddy Bears' Picnic

Our teddies and favourite toys came to school to see what we do in Room 17. They helped with reading, story writing and art. We made them teddy biscuits and shared our milk with them at our Teddy Bears' Picnic. Oakley helped to take the photos for this movie.

Trains

We played with Thomas the Train and then made our own T train and tracks. Toot - toot!

Collage Tigers

We learned how to draw terrific tigers. We asked our buddies to help start our collage - it is a very big job. We will have to finish them next week.

Book Week Stage Show

We took to the stage to show the school our book character costumes.

We were very proud of Chloe (aka Litttle Red Riding Hood) who won the Knights and Castles colouring competition for team Waka.

A special start to term 2

We read some special stories about world War One and made poppies. We put our poppies under the tree by the flag with our buddies.

 The whole school came to a special ANZAC Ceremony.

New for Term 2

There are two new things in this Room 17 photo. Do you know what they are?

1. Amariah, who visited us from the University of Canterbury. She is learning to be a Speech Language Therapist.
2. New desks. They make our classroom very colourful.

Maths

Demi and Lily have counted all the way to 20.

We learned some new maths games. We had to know our adding facts to 5 and 10 really well to play these games.

Letter of the Week Hh

This week we have become experts about the letter H!
We found out how a hovercraft works...

We made mini hamburgers. We all had jobs to do to. Some of us are really good with a peeler and grater. The hamburgers were yummy! Thank you Simon for helping us.
