Along Comes Jake

Our shared book this week was all about a younger brother who makes lots of mess. He even unrolled all the toilet paper! We decided to have a game of toilet paper catch  - lucky it is easy to clean up again.

Amazing Writing

Jellyfish

Jellyfish sting people and other things. Some jellyfish have stings that can kill people.
Jelly fish have no brain but they still know things. Jellyfish not have any spine. Some Jellyfish swim in fresh water. Jellyfish are not jelly or fish. Jellyfish eat lots and lots of plankton. To jellyfish plankton taste like chocolate. Some people eat jellyfish. To them jellyfish are very, very yummy and tasty! By Lukas

Here is a jar and pens and blue dye. We are making a jellyfish in water. By Wincent

We are going to make a jellyfish and it is not real. It is only pretend. We are calling it Squishy. By Aaliyah

This is a truck

The Elephants reading group read a story about trucks. Look at what they made with the blocks!

Lots of ice

Not only is it cold outside this week, it is cold in Room 17.
We have been looking at freeing as part of our science inquiry on Change.
Ice blocks
We dissolved powdered juice in water and made it into ice blocks.

We found out that the made up juice froze but the powder didn't.... and that the ice blocks tasted great.
Icebergs
We froze some water. We marked the water level on the container to see what happens to water when it freezes.

We found out that water gets bigger (expands) when it freezes!
We put the ice in water, it floated - just like an iceberg. Most of the ice was below the water level  - just like an iceberg!

The ice felt very cold and hard.

Week 8 - All about P

Paper Mache Penguins
Last week we started a mystery project with paper mache. This week we found out we were making penguins.

Porridge
We have been studying chemical changes in Science. We have already discovered that rolled oats don't dissolve in water. This week we tried adding heat ... and made porridge.
While we were waiting for the porridge to cook we had a look at the wall hangings our school made last term. We tried to find our artworks. The panels represent the different cultures at Russley School.

Pukeko Alive!
We coloured some pukeko pictures.

They came to life when we looked at them through an app on the ipad.

We learned that pukekos have long legs because they live in swampy ground.

Teen Numbers

Demi and Lily have been learning about teen numbers.
Watch them make a number 15.

Football

Some of us played football at Developmental this week. Our soccer goals kept blowing away in the strong wind and the score was a bit one sided but we all had lots of fun.

Choir performance

We went to see the school choir in the old hall. They were practising  for the North West Festival Concert. They were amazing!

Lots of 'm's

We have a new person in Room 17. Welcome to Brooke and her family.
Can you find her in our M and Ms video? Look at the end of this post to see if you found her!

M and M Maths

We guessed how many lollies were in a pack. Then we sorted and counted. We found out that counting by ones was too slow. We counted in twos and grouped in tens. We found out there were 212 M and Ms in the pack.

What will it be?

We are busy with messy paper mache. What are we making?
We will finish our project next week. Come back and see what we made.

Monkey posters

We made monkeys; they were characters from the story 'Monkey bridge'.

We are magicians!

We had a magic day. We saw a 3 magic tricks; at story writing, reading and maths.

Nests and Nocturnal Animals (for 'n' week)

We looked at a timelapse video of a nest being built. We made our own nests for baby birds and wrote about them. The birds can go in and out of the nest.

We also found out about nocturnal animals. We made pictures of New Zealand's night animals out of newspaper.

Shapes all around us

This week we all took photos of shapes in our classroom. We turned them into an iBook. Look at the pages from our book.
