Buddy time/fun time

We had a busy Friday. As well as our normal Friday programme, we had some extra special events! We were visited by our buddies. They brought us a lovely hand made Christmas treat. 😊 Then they took us outside for some throwing and catching under the trees. After lunch it was over 30 degrees - time for some sprinkler fun before we do some writing in teams.

Christmas Concert

Veronica introduces our Christmas Concert item this week.

Successful Swimming

Bus Behaviour

Can you believe it? Just look at how quiet we are on the bus!

Here is the last day of swimming. We had fun with lots of swimming relay races and diving practice! Just look how much progress we have made.

Bridge Building

We have been learning about the new bridge near the airport.
We thought about different types of bridges and what the bridges are for.
Then it was our turn ... we designed bridges of our own. Natalie and Leyan interview some of our bridge builders. We may have some future structural engineers in Room 17.

Wacky Day Friday

We had a great Wacky Day Friday.
Because we have our swimming lesson during Team Waka developmental time, we decided to have our own special developmental when we got back. We managed to fit in our reading (by reading our books to our reading partners) before we had an early lunch with our buddy class.
We enjoyed a talent show in the hall during lunchtime. After lunch we competed in buddy class relay races and then we went to a school disco to finish the day. Phew! What a day.
Take a look at this video - it is a very quick snapshot of the day.

Thank you to Veronica who was our Developmental reporter.

Swimming

We go swimming with Room 16 every morning. We have just finished a very successful first week of swimming.

Not only are we great swimmers.... we are amazingly independent at getting changed by ourselves and looking after all our clothes. Ka Pai Team 17

Drawing Dragons

We drew dragons and then wrote descriptions about them. Listen to us read our stories. We have very quiet voices so turn up the volume to enjoy our stories!

Our Room 17 Reporters showing you some of the clever things we made in PL week.

Reported by Mushal and Nate.

Reported by Connor.
We also made planes. Sam made an Emerites plane.

Kitty, Veronica and Ashton are sharing their planes with Room 17

Then we all made paper planes and went outside to test how they flew.

Keeping Ourselves Safe

We have begun our new inquiry. How do we keep ourselves safe?
Step. 1. All about ourselves.
We have been learning about ourselves - how we are the same, how we are different and what is important to us.
We are learning to be able to say our name and address and what makes us special.
Because we are all stars and it is st week; we heard a story about sneetches and how they learned that it didn't matter what kind of sneetch they were, with stars or without stars, they were all special.
We made sneetchs and our own special stars.

We all have different fingerprints. We made fingerprint birds - they are all different but they are all beautiful!

First we made the wire and the fingerprints....then we created some very unique birds.

Full steam ahead in Term 4

Tr Week: Trains and Tracks

Mushal reports on our train and train track making.

Calendar Art

This term we have been painting 'our tree' (the tree outside our window) as it changes through the seasons. We took photos all year and used them to help us paint our pictures for calendar art.
Take a look at each child's masterpiece. What creative kids!

New gardens

Thanks to some wonderful parent helpers, our new gardens are ready to bloom. We had turns helping to plant the vegetables that will be ready for harvest before the end of the year. We can't wait!

Magic Messages

Our buddies came and helped us make flowers that magically open to reveal a message for our buddy inside. Thank you Room 10 for being our big buddies!

Some of the work we did at the end of last term is up and making our classroom look great for the new term. Take a look at the wild things swinging through our room.
The super stars from Room 17 write about being on stage.

Whales and Wheelbarrows

Week 10 was Wh week.
We learnt many facts about whales. Did you know that blue whales are the largest animals ever to be on earth?
At the beginning of the year we found writing really hard and didn't like it much. Now look at us! We make picture plans with labels to plan our story and then get started. We are independent and very quiet workers at writing time. No wonder we are fantastic authors!
In this movie we are writing non-fiction stories about a whale rescue on Waimairi Beach (just down the road).

We borrowed the caretaker's wheelbarrow and gave each other rides. What fun!

Spring Lamb

Room 16 have been learning about spring. Hayden brought his lamb to school. We went outside to have a look too.

The Team Players of Room 17

Watch the wonderful Team 17 sharing... During our final Augustine dance practice we alternated between dancing and playing. We are champions at both!!

Ika

We went to visit the salmon that Room 13 have been raising. Soon they will be let go in Corfe Stream. Imagine.... they will return after several years at sea, to the exact same place, to lay their eggs that will begin the life cycle again!

Weeks 7 and 8

The whole school has been very busy preparing for Augustine. We are loving rehearsals and the show songs. We have still managed to sneak in some numeracy and literacy learning!

Estimating and measuring.....

... number pairs that make 10.

...the life cycle of a chicken

...and we even made cheese (and ate it!)

Week 6

We had some cricket coaches from Burnside Cricket Club come and play cricket with us. What fun!

After our reading groups and reading activities we are allowed to choose a literacy game or to make things in our craft corner. Look at what we can make....

Production Performance

Room 17 is working hard to learn the dance for the production. We each have a partner that we have been practising with.
We can't wait to show you what we can do on Thursday 21 September. If this is your first Russley production you won't believe your eyes. About 3/4 of the Augustine tickets have sold already - those who have been before are really keen to make sure they don't miss out.

Zoos and Zebras

We learned lots about zebras and zoo animals this week.

We also made some very unusual animals. What could they be?

Sunday, August 13, 2017

Xylophones and Glockenspiels

How are xylophones and glockenspiels the same? How are they different? We found out they are both instruments but one has wooden keys and one has metal keys. Do you know which is which?

Animated Numbers

This week we brought some numbers to life. Listen as they introduce themselves!

Week 2

Skeletons, Sophie Pascoe, snowmen, scarecrows and a stethoscope. It must be 'S' week in Room 17!
Watch us making our scarecrows - part of our fabric and fibre art unit.

Last term Dr Chris brought his stethoscope. (He couldn't come during S week because he was busy at the hospital; so he came early.) We listened to the teddy bear's heart beat.  Yes, we know that a teddy bear does not really have a heart!

Penguins and Purple People Eaters

We have been busy with new wall displays from P week.
Good things take time, and our purple people eaters took 4 days of painting. We had to wait for the paint to dry between layers.

The penguins were much quicker. We made these during group reading time.

Sunday, July 30, 2017

Term 3 is underway!

Backwards Maths
We have been learning to count backwards. It is very useful for working out subtraction problems. We went out and wrote numbers on the court with chalk. We counted back from 10, 20 or 30. We are getting pretty good but will need a little more practice.

Reporter: Asinate

Augmented Reality Pukeko
We did our very best colouring so we could make our pukeko come to life!

Reporter: Lilly

Buddy Reading
Watch us reading our reading books to each other.

Week 8 News Reports

Sam reports on the Kakariki and Karaka maths groups sorting numbers from smallest to biggest. To make it a tricky challenge not all the numbers are there! We have to be very careful to count properly.

Nicholas reports on R week activities.

It's a small world

The P.T.A's fund raiser had us all learning greetings from other countries.
We had a wonderful cultural assembly on Thursday to celebrate the many cultures of the whanau of Russley School. Some children wore outfits or dressed in the flag colours from their native countries.

We all tested our knowledge of flags and greetings and have sent the marked 'test' home to help with gathering the sponsorship money for the P.T.A. Please return this money as soon as possible.
